A note from the Executive Director
Hello VTAHPERD members-
I am happy to report that the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) Alliance Assembly (AA) overwhelmingly approved unification (204 yes, 0 no, 1 abstained) at the Charlotte National Convention. This is an historic moment in time for our 128-year old Alliance.
• Our new vision statement is: “Healthy People – Physically Educated and Physically Active!” • Our new mission is: “To advance professional practice and promote research related to health and physical education, physical activity, dance and sport.”
Providing quality programs and resources for physical education and health education will remain a vital component of AAHPERD’s mission.
There will be various changes to the governance structure of AAHPERD and the Eastern District, the details of which will be announced later this fall. The governance of state affiliates (such as VTAHPERD) is not affected by these changes.
At that same meeting the AA elected Dolly Lambdin, Ed.D., of the University of Texas at Austin, as our new President-Elect.
Let’s Move! Active Schools mobilizes “School Champions” – P.E. teachers, classroom teachers, administrators, staff, and even parents – who are ready and willing to be leaders for their school community. This team goes to the Let's Move! Active Schools website and follows a simple, six-step process that includes building a team, conducting a basic school assessment, and creating a customized action plan. Participating schools will have access to free tools and resources, ranging from in-person trainings, to program activation grants to direct, personal assistance from certified professionals.
I hope our Vermont members will investigate this professional training opportunity. Send this link to your principal today! This is a great website!! If your building has been working on a Comprehensive Wellness plan, these resources will help.
